Proud to be Part of Buffalo’s Dyngus Day Celebration

Our Involvement

At BufMet Credit Union (Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union) we were proud to attend the 20th Annual Dyngus Day Parade on April 6! We enjoyed getting to see everyone who came out to celebrate and appreciate those who were able to connect with us! Dyngus Day is always an incredible celebration in Buffalo—full of energy, tradition, and true community spirit. It’s no surprise our city proudly calls itself the Dyngus Day Capital of the World!

What is Dyngus Day?

For those who don’t know, Dyngus Day is a beloved Polish-American holiday celebrated the Monday after Easter, is all about renewal, joy, and bringing people together. In Buffalo, it’s become a vibrant tradition that highlights the city’s rich cultural roots while creating space for everyone to join in the celebration.

Traditions Include:

  • Pussy willow tapping – Lightly tapping friends or loved ones with pussy willows (symbolizing spring and renewal).
  • Water sprinkling (Śmigus-Dyngus) – A playful tradition of splashing water to celebrate cleansing and new beginnings!
  • Polka music & dancing – Live bands, dancing in the streets, and high-energy polka parties.
  • Wearing red & white – Honoring Polish heritage with Poland’s national colors.
  • Parades – Colorful, lively parades with floats, dancers, and community groups (a big highlight in Buffalo).
  • Traditional Polish foods – Pierogi, kielbasa, golabki, and other favorites.
  • Festive drinks – Polish beer and spirits are commonly part of the celebration.
  • “Prima Aprilis” fun & flirting – Historically a day of playful courtship and social fun.
  • Decorative accessories – Flower crowns, ribbons, and spring-themed attire.
  • Community gatherings – Bringing people together to celebrate culture, heritage, and connection.
